The Colossus Of Rhodes
  • Colossus of Rhodes was a giant statue of the god Helios , built on the Greek Island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos between 292 BC and 280 BC. It was about the same size as the Statue Of Liberty in New York, it stood on a lower ledge.
  • Construction of the Colossus.
    The statue standing on a 50 feet high white marble pedestal near the Mandraki harbour entrance to Rhodes.
  • Destruction of the Colossus.
    The statue stood for only 56 years until Rhodes was hit by an earthquake in 224 BC.
  • The Myth Behind The Colossus.
    Many pictures show the statue with one foot on either side of the harbour mouth with ships passing under it. Basicaly it shows that the Colossus is connectiong one side of the harbour with the other.
