Pompeii
Pompeii--Say pom-PAY
"A Wonder of the World"
Have
you ever heard of the ancient Italian city called Pompeii?
Pompeii was a large and thriving city that was destroyed when a volcano
named Mt. Vesuvius erupted, killing many of the city's inhabitants
and leaving behind a perfectly preserved example of ancient life
in the Mediterranean.
Pompeii is a ruined Roman city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. It was destroyed during a catastrophic volcanic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The volcano buried the city under many feet of ash and it was lost for 1,600 years before its accidental rediscovery. Vesuvius could erupt catastrophically again. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, it is one of Italy's leading tourist attractions
